Training Program - Dorian Yates
Share
The Dorian Yates workout is famous for its High-Intensity Training (HIT) style:
Low volume
Extremely high effort
Heavy weights
Mostly 1 all-out working set per exercise
4 training days per week
Focus on progressive overload and recovery
He trained with a “warm up → one brutal working set to failure” philosophy inspired by Mike Mentzer.
Core Principles
Train to failure
The final working set is pushed until another rep is impossible.
Low volume Usually:
1–2 warm-up sets
1 maximal working set
Controlled form Slow negatives and strict execution.
Recovery matters More rest days than typical bodybuilding splits.

Example Set Structure
For a compound lift:
Warm-up Set 1: light × 12
Warm-up Set 2: moderate × 8
Warm-up Set 3: heavy × 4
Working Set: all-out × 6–8 reps
That final set is where the growth stimulus happens.
Why It Worked
The Dorian system empathised:
Maximum intensity
Perfect recovery
Progressive overload
Mental focus
It worked especially well for advanced lifters with strong recovery awareness.
Important Caveat
This style is very demanding and can be hard for beginners because:
Training to failure every session increases injury risk
Recovery can become difficult
Exercise technique must be excellent
Most people do better with:
Slightly more volume
Failure only on selected sets
Better fatigue management
Modern “Dorian-Inspired” Version (Safer)
4-Day Split
Day 1: Upper
Day 2: Lower
Day 3: Rest
Day 4: Push
Day 5: Pull
Day 6–7: Rest
Use:
2 hard sets instead of 1
Failure only on last set
Controlled negatives
Logbook progression
This keeps the spirit of HIT without the extreme fatigue.
